Toyota Brake Pads

What Brake Pads Do

You need your vehicle to stop when and where you want. Your brakes are responsible for making sure that happens. For you, it's simple. You press the sole of your foot against the brake pedal, and the rotation of your wheels slows.

There's a lot more to braking, though. Your actions lead to the master brake cylinder sending hydraulic brake fluid through lines and hoses to the brake calipers. The fluid's pressure causes the calipers to close onto the brake rotors to produce the resistance that slows you down. Your brake pads prevent the damage that metal-on-metal contact between the calipers and rotors would cause.

Sadly, even the highest-quality brake pads can eventually wear down and begin to fail. That's not good, since you can't depend on your brakes performing as you're accustomed. Replacing yours before they completely fail is the smart choice.

How to Spot Failing Brake Pads

Signs of trouble include:

• Loud squeaking or squealing noises when you're braking
• Needing more time and distance to stop
• Bouncing or vibrating brake pedal
