You have an HVAC system in your Toyota or Scion vehicle that helps you control the cabin temperature so that you remain comfortable when you're driving. That system, whether it's cooling you down on a summer day or warming the passenger space in the dead of winter, is composed of several parts. It's essential to know how they work, in case a component fails and needs to be replaced.

How Air Conditioning Works

An AC system has three main components: a compressor, condenser, and evaporator. That means that cooling takes a few steps. First, a refrigerant is pressurized until it becomes a hot gas. That gas is then chilled, which causes it to turn back into a liquid. After that liquid passes through a valve, it's turned into a low-pressure gas again -- before getting chilled once more. At that point the cooler air gets blown by a fan through your air vents and into the cabin.

How Heating Works

Heating is much simpler. Hot coolant is sent through a heater core. A front mount fan blows over that core, sending warm air into the cabin.

How to Spot AC and Heating Problems

Unfortunately, even the best AC and heating parts can begin to fail. Signs of trouble include:

  • A warmer-than-usual cabin
  • You notice the sweet smell of coolant in the air
  • You don't get cold or warm air blowing through the vents
  • You see worn-down belts
