How Toyota Brake Calipers Work

When you apply pressure to the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder responds by sending brake fluid to the calipers. The pressure from that fluid forces the calipers to press brake pads against brake rotors to generate the friction -- or resistance -- that's needed to slow your wheels. Apply enough pressure for a long enough period of time, and you'll come to a complete stop.

How to Spot Failing Brake Calipers

That friction creates a tremendous amount of heat, though. That heat can cause even the highest quality brake calipers to eventually fail. Signs of trouble include:

  • The brakes make strange noises
  • Your brake pedal feels unusually soft or spongy
  • Needing to pump the brake pedal to get the brakes to engage
  • Your vehicle pulls to one side when you brake
