How an Alternator Works

Put simply, it converts the mechanical energy from your engine into the electricity that feeds your battery, parts, systems, and accessories. It starts with the engine crankshaft, which turns the pistons' vertical motion into rotary motion. That moves a drive belt that's attached to a pulley located on the rotor shaft. That shaft rotates, which agitates magnetic coils contained within. The coils create a magnetic field, which is captured as AC power by a rectifier. The rectifier turns that into the DC power that feeds your battery, electronics, power windows, wiper blades, and more.

How to Spot Alternator Problems

Even the best alternator can go bad eventually, though. When that happens, your battery becomes the sole source of electricity Ð which means it can drain fast and leave you stranded without power. Avoid that. Signs of a failing alternator include:

Power windows stop working
Dim or flickering headlights
Sound system problems
Your battery keeps dying
Strange engine noises
