The Differences Between the Brake Systems

Your Toyota or Scion vehicle has one of two types of braking systems to slow the rotation of your wheels. The first type uses disc brakes, while the second uses drum brakes. The two systems share some parts in common, such as master brake cylinders, hoses, lines, and pistons. Where they differ is in the method each uses to create the friction -- or resistance -- that stops your vehicle.

Disc Brake System

This type uses brake calipers to clamp down onto the brake rotors to produce the resistance that slows and stops your wheels. The calipers have brake pads attached to them to prevent damage that would otherwise be caused by the metal-on-metal contact of the calipers and rotors abrading against each other.

Drum Brake System

Drum brake systems, on the other hand, feature brake shoes and drum brakes that press together to create that resistance.
