What Do Toyota Brake Drums Do?

A brake drum is part of your Toyota or Scion vehicle's drum brake system. As a matter of fact, it's in the very name. What it does is simple, but important. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder sends brake fluid through brake lines and hoses. The fluid forces a brake shoe to fasten to the brake drum and generate the friction, or resistance, that slows the rotation of your wheels.

What Are The Types of Toyota Brake Drum Systems?

There are four. With regular brake drums, the shoes press on the drum's inner surface. If your vehicle features a clasp brake drum, the shoes press on the outside of the drum. With pinch brake drums, two shoes press the drum between them. Finally, a band brake adds a flexible belt that wraps around the drum.

No matter which type your vehicle features, though, eventually a brake drum can wear out and go bad. When that happens, you need to replace them as soon as possible to ensure that you're able to stop when and where you want.
